Advent Breakfast

Winter is closing in. The tree branches are bare, and the vegetable garden has been gleaned by both cows and chickens. Meadow grass is turning brown, and the cow barn is full of hay. We make the beds with flannel sheets now, and as the nights get shorter and colder, we start to feel the first twinges of excitement for the coming of Advent and the Christmas holidays, a happy, busy time of bringing in greens and dried herbs to decorate the house for the holiday season. The New York State Fair

2010 was the first year Dutch Belted Cows were included in the Dairy Cattle Show at the New York State Fair. It was also the first time I had been to the State Fair since I was a child in 4-H. The President of the Dutch Belted Cattle Association, Cornell Upson, wanted to exhibit as many “Dutch Belts” in the show as possible, so we loaded our cows and brought them to the fair in Syracuse. It was a real adventure, from sleeping overnight in our VW camper van, to learning all the details that go into getting the cows ready to show. Continue reading
